If reputable sources like Macleans magazine and Andrew Coyne say it, it must be true!

oh dear…
ahhh, Adam Radwanski has possibly made my day:
- As I’ve made clear many times before, it’s always best to defer to the wisdom of Noel Gallagher. So honestly, wouldn’t this have made the best possible entrance music for Paul Martin last night? (Next question: If he’d kept the receipts for the friends he bought, could demand a refund after they didn’t bother showing up at his darkest hour last night?)
life is like a never ending pile of dishes
…or maybe that is just my kitchen counter. It seems like everytime I turn around the pile is bigger.
But that is probably not the most interesting event going on in the world right now.
Biggest news is Canada has a new Prime Minister. The Rt. Hon. Paul Martin called the Hon. Stephen Harper last night to concede and to state that he will not be continuing on as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. It seems that Mr Dithers life-long ambition of being PM is over in 18 months.
So we have a Conservative government now. What does that mean? Who knows. The Senate is still Liberal as are all the major civil service positions and the Supreme Court. So, with a minority government (124 to 103 grit, 29 dipper, 51 bq, and 1 independent), Harper is basically screwed.
Results were not quite what I expected, although I wasn’t so bold as to put out seat projections. I thought the Liberals wouldn’t get as many seats as they managed to. And I did think that the local green candidate, Andrew Lewis, would do better. Maybe get a seat even. I guess we like the CPC here in Saanich-Gulf Islands. Its fine and dandy to vote green (last election) when you know that the conservative guy won’t be part of the government. But when you have a chance at getting a government mp, of course vote for him. Can’t say I blame everyone.
It was quite the distressing night last night, however. I had class till 9:30, then had arranged to meet someone afterwards (forgetting it was election night for some reason). So I didn’t get home until midnight, tragically, and had to wait until then to know the extent of the damage. So I didn’t get to sleep till after 1am. Poor me. Yet another election where the candidate I vote for does not get elected.
ahh Victoria
I would have to say that I saw the epitome of a description of a Victoria-ite on TV today. It was a pasta commercial with a kid and grandpa talking. The kid was telling grandpa about a kid at school who’s parents make him eat tofu hot dogs and fennel soup. They lamented the over-the-top healthiness of that. And then grandpa delivers the punchline – eating tofu is one step removed from hippie craziness which is one step away from wearing socks and sandals… ahh Victoria.
Election Day
Today is election day in Canada. But I can’t say anything about that until after the polls close in the last electoral ridings. And since that is my riding, nothing to worry about until 7pm. On the downside, my class tonight goes until 9:30, so by the time I get home, we’ll probably already have a prime minister and, for the second federal election in a row, I won’t get to see the little riding pictures on TV change colour as they go liberal red, tory blue, or ndp orange. Woe is me.
I feel your pain…
Yay for the Science and Health section of the Globe and Mail. This article is ‘somewhat’ enlightening. The best part? The comment by Tim Johnston from Windsor: “Hmmmm. Interesting. As a man, I wonder how I’ll feel when the Liberals get trounced in the upcoming election? You guessed it.”
Oh the pain and agony.
Same old same old
Is anyone else noticing a trend with current political advertisments? How many times a day can I see the same ad. I mean its not the same ad the whole time, its just all three parties have the same ad. Blank screen (maybe with blurry photo of other leader behind), short, simple sentences displayed overtop (because short, simple sentences is either all they can manage or all they think the general Canadian can manage), with a female voice over. Is that all you can come up with? I thought the Conservative interview ads were bad, but at least they were different. Well, I guess there’s only a week left of watching them.
Win a trip to Liberia
Okay, so I lied. I really do have more to say about the Canadian election. I’ve been sitting and watching TV for all of 10 minutes and I have already seen the new NDP election ad twice. I’ve only sat through two sets of commercials. Now, I kinda liked the old one. At least it was clever. This one seems a little too pleading, too much like he’s scraping the bottom of the barrel for votes.
Now about the free trip… The NDP is giving away a trip to Cyprus, Liberia, The Bahamas, Malta, Vanuatu or Panama. Why these countries, you’ll have to go here to find out! What they won’t think of next.
Whack!
Whack the PM – this should help you feel better.
UPDATE: Poll results.
