Chicks and CNTM

Two important and note-worthy things have happened lately. First, I finally got the new Dixie Chicks album which came out last week. I actually got it on Monday, and it has been on high rotation in the iPod and on my computer ever since. Can I just say it is excellent?!? I am thoroughly enjoying the whole thing, but especially the subtle (and not so subtle) political messages. The Chicks are definitely back with a vengeance.
Secondly, a Canadian spin-off of an American “reality” TV show begins tonight. One guess what it is… Clues: it was filmed entirely in Victoria, I have watched every season of the American one except the first, the title is in this title.
Updates as to the quality of this knock off will follow as things of import (or just things which are darn hilarious) occur

Jane and Julia’s Recital

I finally got to hear Jane and Julia play on their own (instead of in the orchestra) yesterday. They put on a fabulous recital with lots of unique elements: There were poetry readings interspersed throughout their performance as well as two flute players who finished up the recital. It was great fun to see them play!

I’ve always liked strings like violin and viola, and they did a great job with their duets (and solo pieces – one of which Allie joined in on)! I wish I could have made it to more concerts throughout the year. Hopefully this won’t be the last! They played music by Mozart, Bach, Hayden, and Bartok. Apparently the Mozart wasn’t very good, but I missed the bad parts. I really liked the Bartok though. Julia’s mum read a poem in Hungarian between Bartok pieces. It was about mosquitoes (I found that out afterwards!) and fit in with the music they played (one was a Mosquito Dance).
Afterwards, they served up some fantastic Middle Eastern and Hungarian food – coffee and dates along with an assortment of baked goodies Julia’s mum made.

At the Juno Awards

Oh how I love Canadian music. What other awards show could winners come on stage with a beer in their hand and procede to gesture with it at all the people they were thanking?!?
Seriously though, there were some great moments at the awards tonight:
Host Pamela Anderson on the seal hunt: “I like blood on the ice, but only when its a hockey arena. Don’t kill the seals”
Jann Arden on Pam’s comment: “I just want to say that my entire brassiere is made of seal eyelids”
Another Presenter on Pam: “I didn’t know Hugh Hefner was producing the Junos this year!”
And Michael Buble on winning [yet another] award: “Oh my god, I don’t know what to say. I feel like Kelly Clarkson.”
Yeah, I’m not sure what the means either.

KT Tunstall

Pretty snazzy y’all. Make sure your sound is on (unless you are in a place where you shouldn’t have it on, in which case, make sure it is off becuase the video is automatic play).

Copywrited music

I bought a new cd the other day. A fantastic cd in fact, by a talented UK musician. (Check out her video (left side) – she does all the music herself!).
But my beef begins when I tried to put it on my iPod (which is miraculously working again), I couldn’t. The music is under the “copy control” thing and they have no agreement with Apple, so I am unable to listen to it on my iPod. Windows Media. Fine. iTunes. Nope. So if I want to listen to this music at all outside of the house, I have to either buy the music off of iTunes music store or resurrect my discman.
While I am all for artists getting fair compensation for their music and not copying it and all that (I buy way too many albums annually to not be for. I could save lots of money if I just ripped it off of other people), I think this is a little too much. Their “content protection” is preventing me from listening to music I have bought fair and square with no intention of copying to give away.
