Notes from a Jet-Setter

Yes, I am back. Now for sure, this time, maybe, is my last flight before Offshore starts. No promises though… I had a fantastic weekend/5 days in Alberta. Started it off in Calgary then off to Canmore and Banff. Could not have asked for better weather. Seriously. Well, I wouldn’t have minded it a tad bit warmer, but hey, when it is only -5 and there are brilliant blue skies with not a cloud to be seen and the sun is reflecting off of the snow on the mountain peaks, no complaints. Amongst other things, went to a rocking jazz guitar concert at the Banff Centre, saw the ice sculpture carving at Lake Louise, got to hang out with my friend and his family and celebrated his nephew’s 2nd birthday (first two-year-old’s birthday I’ve been to where champagne was served!). Good times. Then it was down to Lethbridge where I ended up seeing lots of friend from high school days. Wandering around town with Bette doing random errands and chatting was a highlight as was dinner with Sonya and Martin and Jo and Glen. It had been far too long since I was there. The flight back was spectacular, although the Rockies were clouded over this time, the Coastals were lovely and I think I flew over Sechelt before turning back to approach Vancouver Airport. I said hi from the sky Nanc, but you probably couldn’t hear me. 😉
…pictures forthcoming whenever Blogger sees fit to allow me to post them.

The Sub

Yay! I’m a substitute teacher! That is right, ladies and gentlemen, I taught for the first time on Friday, so now I can add teaching to my rather odd list of work experience. Although, I have to admit, it was rather like being a camp leader because pretty much I just had to keep them on task and busy and not running crazy wild around the school. The kids were all pretty good and there was nothing too challenging. I had a band class and 2 PE classes of grade 9 and 10s. The school was the one my step mum works at and Dad subs there sometimes too. So when I introduced myself to the classes, it was always pretty funny. I think the best was the gr 10 girls:

“Hello, my name is Miss Hoyer” (which sounds weird. Why can’t they just call me Gillian for pete’s sake!) – me
“What is your first name?” – girl #1
“Gillian” – me
“Hey, there is another teacher here with that name” – girl #1
“Yeah, silly, she is the teacher for this class” – girl #2
“Oh yeah, Jill” – girl #1
“What was your name again?” – girl #2
“Miss Hoyer” – me
“Are you related to Mrs Hoyer?” – girl #1. Shall we call her the “bright one”??
“Yes, she is my stepmother, and Mr Hoyer, who also subs here is my father” – me
“HE is your father?!? Woah!” – the bright one
“Yes, and now that we have established that there are teachers at this school with both my first and last names, lets get on with class.” – me

Oy yoy yoy.

Extreme Slothness

Yesterday, I was possibly the laziest person I know. Rather than risk my life going outside in a Vancouver blizzard (this is actually the view out of the window. Note the driving snow)…
I decided to stay inside and sew 29 badges on my blanket. We all have these blankets that we sew badges on from everywhere we’ve been and I collected a few when I was in Europe, so on the blanket they had to go.
Now 29 is a lot (not all of them were from Europe, there was Cuba and China and a few other miscellaneous ones) of badges to just sew on while doing nothing, so I decided to watch a movie while I was doing it. Well, three movies to be exact… yes, I am a loser; I watched the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy yesterday. Extended versions. All three. I think I need to nap today to recover.

Happy Christmas

Well, one day before Christmas Eve. As you know, I’m in Montreal and this year is to be the first Hoyer Family Christmas in, well, ages. The last of the Hoyers arrive tomorrow evening (in the form of Dad and Colleen). It is pouring off and on right now in Montreal, so unless it drops 5-10 degrees or so and starts to snow (whilst making the roads hellish with ice), it looks like I’m in for a green and brown Christmas once again. Probably it will snow in Vancouver just to mock me.
I want to wish all of you a happy Christmas and I’ll talk to you again afterwards. To those of you going to Urbana, have a fantastic time and say hi to everyone who might know me – Steve B and the American team if you run into them.
Love to all.

Notes from the Nursing Home

I’ve been composing posts in my head for the past few days while I sit with Granny, but haven’t actually written anything yet. There have been some memorable and interesting events over the last few days. Most of the time, I’m just sitting with Granny as she lies in her fancy lazy-boy ejector chair with her eyes closed (I call it the ejector chair because it is one of those ones with a remote that makes it recline and when you have it sit up, it will bring you to almost a standing position to make getting in/out easier). I never know if she is sleeping or just resting becuase she is tired all of the time.
Sometimes I talk and tell stories about things I did in Europe because she has been to most of the places I went. Other times I tell her things about China becuase she hasn’t seen me since last year so I haven’t talked to her in person about any of these places. Sometimes she’ll open her eyes and interject a comment in her quiet whisper of a voice. Other times she will reach out her hand and grab mine (and tell me I’m cold which is funny coming from her becuase her hands are usually cold).
The other day, I was trying to do something and not having much sucess. Her (well-intentioned I’m sure) comment was “I’m glad someone else is as stupid asm I am.” I told her it must run in the family. Thanks Granny.
Once, one of the other ladies on her floor wandered into the room in her wheelchair and asked me if I knew any men from World War I. Err, um, no. Sorry to disappoint.
Today, Granny got her hair done, which was a huge ordeal. It meant going down to the salon on the 1st floor and she had to sit in a less than comfortable chair for a few hours (yay perms!). But, she wouldn’t hear of not getting her hair done. As it was, she was dozing off in the chair while Marie was putting the rods in her hair. And then dozing off more under the dryer.
While we were there, one of the other ladies in the home, who was also getting her hair done, was muttering to herself the whole time about various random things. It was cute and sad at the same time.

News Flash

I have an interview in Victoria next Saturday! Here is hoping I get the job and that I figure out how to sell myself as a potential employee even with the fact that I’m going to be leaving in May to work for SALTS. Anyone have floorspace next weekend?!?

my favourite things…

I have decided to post in honour of my favourite coffee shop in Victoria which I will not be able to enjoy for a long time now.
Ladies and Gentlemen, presenting Mirage Coffee. Previously, there was just the one shop on Blanshard but now there is a second one on Government close to the inner harbour. I still like the one on Blanshard better but I can never find it. In addition to being beautiful, it also tastes good… and they never think I’m crazy for asking for a soy mocha. Mmmm.
