Still no pictures because, silly me, in the hurry to get into the zodiac this morning I forgot to bring my cord. We are on Maui at the moment, the town of Lahina. The last few days have been eventful. Sunday we went up Mauna Kea, the hightest point on the Big Island, and, at just under 14000ft the tallest mountain in the world. Yes, it is taller than Everest because it goes from 0 to 14000 ft in about a 2 hour drive (plus it extends some 15000 ft below the water). On the top are the worlds best telescopes, including 2 (Krek 1 and Krek 2) which have 10m lenses. Which, to put it mildly, is huge. We went inside 2 of the telescopes up there and stayed up top to watch the sun set over Maui. The clouds decend as it cools off at night and so it was like looking out of an airplane with clouds below us and the sun set, except we were standing on land!
Leaving the Big Island saw us battling crazy winds (we were surfing down waves at 11knts) in our passage to Molokini, a half crater extinct volcano which has great snorkling. Or so I have heard, everyone got to go off snorkling while I made breakfast. Breakfast you say? Yes, we arrived there at 5:30 am to beat all the tour boats who litterally take over the place around 8:30. After some snorlking, everyone came back on the boat and ate breakfast then we headed over to Maui where we are at the moment. We are anchored off Lahina, the former capitol of Hawaii and a former whale town where the guy who wrote Moby Dick visited.
We pull up the hook tonight and head up to Kuai before making out way down to Oahu and Honolulu by Independance Day.

Aloha!
We docked in Hawaii – Hilo on the Big Island – last night just after midnight and were officially cleared through customs this morning! I spent this morning at the weekly farmers market with Katie stocking up on fresh fruits and veggies we have not seen for a few weeks. This afternoon I, with some others, drove out to some waterfalls and then to a beach where we snorkled for a bit (and I got to try out my new equipment birthday presant from Dad and Colleen!). The first thing that struck me was the sand was black from the volcanic rocks. Then, I got out there and saw all sorts of huge colourful corals and lots of bright fish. And then there were the turtles!!!
Anyway, internet is expensive here, so if you haven’t checked out the daily log on www.salts.ca that Bonice, the Skippers wife, does each night, you should because it is a pretty good insight into our days. She does not exaggerate the rocking of the ship and the craziness of the galley at times. I’ve only been burnt twice though, which I am proud of. Another highlight for me was bowsprit hanging yesterday – hanging from a rope (in a harnes) from the tip of the bowsprit and dangling in the water. Not only is it lots of fun and very refreshing, it is a great way to exfoliate every part of your body… I’m looking forward to sailing past the flowing lava in the next few days and seeing the bay where Captain Cook was killed. Then its up to some of the other islands. Photos when I can get cheaper internet!
From the Air
I like getting paid.
I read 12 books last month. Does that officially qualify me as a bookworm?
And some pictures from the weekend:
Notes from a Jet-Setter
Yes, I am back. Now for sure, this time, maybe, is my last flight before Offshore starts. No promises though… I had a fantastic weekend/5 days in Alberta. Started it off in Calgary then off to Canmore and Banff. Could not have asked for better weather. Seriously. Well, I wouldn’t have minded it a tad bit warmer, but hey, when it is only -5 and there are brilliant blue skies with not a cloud to be seen and the sun is reflecting off of the snow on the mountain peaks, no complaints. Amongst other things, went to a rocking jazz guitar concert at the Banff Centre, saw the ice sculpture carving at Lake Louise, got to hang out with my friend and his family and celebrated his nephew’s 2nd birthday (first two-year-old’s birthday I’ve been to where champagne was served!). Good times. Then it was down to Lethbridge where I ended up seeing lots of friend from high school days. Wandering around town with Bette doing random errands and chatting was a highlight as was dinner with Sonya and Martin and Jo and Glen. It had been far too long since I was there. The flight back was spectacular, although the Rockies were clouded over this time, the Coastals were lovely and I think I flew over Sechelt before turning back to approach Vancouver Airport. I said hi from the sky Nanc, but you probably couldn’t hear me. 😉
…pictures forthcoming whenever Blogger sees fit to allow me to post them.
On the road again
I’ve been sitting in the same place for three weeks… positively long enough for stagnation by recent standards. I guess it is only fitting that I’m off again this week. Friday sees me to Calgary for two days, then it is down to Lethbridge on Sunday for two more days. Lethbians, let me know and maybe I can say hi when I’m there!
Memories
I took far too many photos in Europe. Some, sadly, will never see the light of day as a result. I was going through them tonight and looking at them again. Here are some of my favourites. Click to enlarge – there are just too many to make them large-format in the post. See if you can figure out where they all are… bonus points if you can identify all the figures from the church entry-way.
Slowly but surely
A few more photos added.
Walmart Saga
I swallowed my pride today and went to Walmart. After my experiences with them last month, which were less than good, I pretty much swore I would never go there again despite the fact that they have the cheapest price for developing photos around. Last month, I walked all the way there (an hour) to get some photos developed only to find out when I got there and had already waited in line half an hour that the machine wasn’t working (although I had been assured it was before I left home). Growl. But today, I borrowed the car and drove there (had to go to Best Buy at the same time anyway to exchange a duplicate movie Christmas present and got the Marie Antoinette soundtrack which I quite enjoy) to finally get my Europe photos developed. After dropping them off I went over to Best Buy and did my thing there then headed back to Walmart on the hour they told me the photos would be ready. They weren’t. Not that I was incredibly surprised, there were 400 photos (give or take a dozen or so) in my order after all . However, I had to wait about 30min more. The lady felt bad and she gave me $9 off of my order because I had to wait so long, so I wasn’t complaining. I would have gladly waited another half and hour to save another $9. She handed over my photos and said they were very nice (I guess they look at them as the put them in envelopes) and I left feeling much better about Walmart . Cut to an hour later when I am at home sorting out the photos and I can’t find any of the photos I took in London… or Munich for that matter… or Denmark… or Sweden… or Freiburg… or Galway… hmmm. It turns out, in a Sesame Street sounding way, that Walmart neglected to give me all of the photos that had names “beginning with the letters F, G, H, K, L, and M.” So now I have to go back to Walmart tonight and get them. Suddenly Walmart is not as cool anymore. Maybe I’ll get another $9 off after all.
Europe Pictures Finally
I’m finally getting around to uploading pictures from Europe to Flickr. I’ll do more as I get around to it and as long as my [borrowed] wireless signal doesn’t keep crapping out like it has been.
