Happy St Patrick’s Day!

In the spirit of today, I am writing in green. I even dressed in green today… not that it is much of a challenge for me to find green in my wardrobe. Tonight IVCF has teamed up with the Navigators and we are having a joint event in Vertigo about U2, St. Patrick, and things Irish. Ought to be good. Really, anything with U2 is bound to be good.
It is amazing how having done absolutely nothing for the past week or so (the result of insane numbers of papers and exams in a small period of time) has left me with absolutely nothing to write/rant about. I could expond on the benefits of breast self-examination and mammography (health psyc – don’t ask) or on whether empathy is an essential aspect of interpersonal communication… however my guess is that is of minimal interest to the general public (heck, its not even that interesting to me). If you’re really lucky, you can hear all about the St Sylvester cycle at Quattro Coronati, Rome in another week or so… that is going to be my latest area of expertise once the paper is completed. Other than that, me talking about having nothing to talk about will have to suffice.
Happy St Patrick’s day…

I survived

Well, here it is, Monday evening and the fact that I am writing this proves that I have survived the last 10 days or so. Less than a month until the end of classes and round about 6 weeks until I finish my last exam! Here we go!

Too good of a day not to post!

Okay, well it didn’t start out as a great day. I daydreamed through Interpersonal Communication, slept through Cognitive Psyc (I haven’t been feeling well the last few days), came home, had a nap, then went to my seminar fully expecting to play volleyball after it. I got to volleyball and found out I was told the wrong time and the game was actually at 9:30pm instead of 10:30pm, so I came home, slightly bummed because I was looking forward to playing. And that is when things got better! Waiting for me was the mail of the day – a card from friends of mine saying they were going to support me for China and a package from a publishing company. Inside the package was an advance copy of a book by a favourite author that I get to read, review, and post my review on this site! (So stay tuned for that, it will be exciting, I promise!) That is all very exiting for me, and my day got even better when I turned on my computer – I checked my email and I got a letter from my all-time favourite prof expressing his support for China and another contribution! All in one day! Could it get any better?!? Ahhh, bed time. 🙂

Its that time of year…

This is just a heads up to everyone who makes there way over to this area of cyberspace every so often: I’m becoming a hermit for the next week to ten days because of catastrophic numbers of papers and exams… so don’t expect to hear much from me unless I am in dire need of procrastination. So take care and I’ll talk to you in a bit (if I survive…)

Reading Break

And thus began the first day of my favourite week of the whole semester: Reading Break.
One thing I have never quite understood, is it a break from reading or a break for reading? Well, regardless, for me, the week will be a break for writing. And some reading too. I have an exam the first Monday back (which is, in my opinion, cruel and unusual punishment on the part of my prof) as well as 2 papers to get a good start on and a third to work on with my group. Did I mention that I am house/teenager sitting this week? And cleaning my house? (Well, maybe not the latter, but it is wishful thinking.)
Today was good though. Went into town in the morning to a great little breakfast place – John’s Place – and met up with a bunch of camp people. We sat and talked for a long while, which was a nice way to start of the day and week. Then Patty and I wandered around downtown for awhile, which you don’t get to do much but which I have managed to do twice in two days. Yay for a week of no classes!

Aside – I’ve been watching the Olympics [way too much watching to be precise] and am slightly concerned with the shots they have on the bobsleds and luges as the athletes go down a training run. Its kinda freaky to be looking straight ahead and see people standing horizontally at the edge of my visual field… these guys are nuts!

First clue that it was a busy week…

I thought that the week would get better once my exams were over. Not so. Or maybe it is just because there were three of the little suckers combined with some of the worst weather ever and I am feeling sorry for myself.
BreakForth was excellent. As good as all of the presenters were, with the exception of, say, Bruce Wilkinson, I do start to wonder if anyone ever has anything new to say. Not that what they said was bad, because (with the one exception noted above) it was good. Good reminders anyway. And it was really really nice to be able to experience that quality of music again, and feel enveloped by worship. That was probably my favourite part of the conference. That and the enthusiasm and excitement of the other people who came from my church. It was so good to watch them and hear their excitement about everything. Thats when I realise how blessed I have been in some of the teaching I have recieved. Oh, and Ken Davis was a hoot as well.
I would have to say that the best part of the weekend was hanging out with my sister, going to her church with her Sunday morning, and seeing friends who live in Alberta who I haven’t seen for years. I need more weekends like that!

Clubs Day

Yesterday and today is clubs day at UVic. I spent a bit of time walking around, picking up free stuff (especially buttons) from the various tables. (My favourite button? The one that says “I’ll blast high tuition fees with my magic tiara.” I wish I had a magic tiara.) Today I checked out the various political clubs because I figured they might be able to tell me who the candidates are in my riding and give me an idea of who I should vote for. If I were to base my vote on the guys sitting at the tables, I would have to say Liberals. The guy was actually able to carry on an intelligent conversation, whereas the NDP’s completely ignored me. However, I like to think that I will be voting with a little more discretion than that.
After reporting my findings to my fellow IVCFers at our table, we got to talking about leaders, in particularity my [lack of] love for the NDP. Our conclusions? Moustaches are creepy.

Karissa, this one’s for you…To see more of the moustache, come out to the Law Building on campus tomorrow, 10:30.

There’s been much in the news lately about the Liberal Ads. What’s with Paul Martin? “I don’t want to have any more of these negative ads.” The next thing we see on TV? A liberal attack ad. (Click on Lisa Laflamme, right side.) Not just any ad, but one which is completely out to lunch (but, “We’re not making this up, we can’t do that”).
A liberal attack ad.
In Canada.
Attack.
In Canada.
And the funny thing? Few of the Liberal candidates are actually trying to distance themselves from the ads.
So, to quote Andrew Coyne, are we in a place where we need to vote Liberal to keep Duceppe out of Stornoway?

On the Greens, they are willing to look into vote reform, keep personal information personal, create a national cancer fighting stragegy, meet and surpass Kyoto, use environmentally responsible energy sources, responsible health care and education, and more…
I like how they are interested in prevention when it comes to health care, not just treatment. They’ve also proposed tax cuts, but only on environmentally friendly items. I guess that is a good way to encourage people to buy green…

the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning…

…and thus started the first day of the last semester of my degree.

Wow, if feels good to actually be there, and I think I’m going to like all my classes this semester too. Even though I’ve only experienced two of them as of yet, I am hopefully optimistic.

Spent a crazy holiday… too short yet too long. I would have liked more time to chill at home here before I had to head back over to the Lower Mainland. However New Years in Cuba was fantastic. Yes, thats right, Cuba. My first ever warm New Years. So now I am back home, sporting a fantastic tan, and loving making everyone here jealous. Especially those who went back east for Christmas where there is heaps of snow… It is currently 3am Cuban standard time, 11pm for me here in the Pacific time zone – I am trying to acclimatize my body back to this time by procrastinating in putting away my laundry so I can find my bed to go to sleep. I reckon that if I wait long enough before going to bed I won’t wake up at 5am again. That was a little too early this morning.

I was out tonight at a farewell dinner for a good friend who is heading off to Australia for 6-ish months. She leaves Monday. I will be sad. All my friends over there, if you meet a really cool Canadian girl named Megan who knows me, be super nice to her! I’m also kinda jealous ’cause I want to go back to Australia…
